A Cape Town practice built around a specialism
A SAICA-registered accounting practice, AGA(SA), built on accounting experience that goes back to 2018 — the last two of those years spent doing crypto accounting from the inside, before this practice opened.
Why a crypto specialism
Lodestar is built on accounting work that began in 2018, the last two years of it spent as the in-house accountant for a cryptocurrency business. That combination — a general practice grounding with crypto worked from the inside — is unusual in South Africa, and it is the reason this practice takes the shape it does.
In-house work means you cannot route the awkward questions elsewhere. Reconciling exchange data that does not agree with itself, tracking cost bases across wallets, valuing transactions in rands at the moment they occurred, explaining the numbers to people who needed them to be right — that was the daily job, not an occasional client query.
Most accountants meet crypto as an interruption: a client mentions Bitcoin, an exchange export lands in the inbox, and it becomes a problem to be got through. The result is a lot of South African holders sitting on records nobody has properly reconciled — balances that do not agree, cost bases that have quietly vanished, and transfers counted twice.
Qualifications
- AGA(SA) — Associate General Accountant, registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. A SAICA designation carries a professional code of conduct, mandatory continuing development, and accountability to a regulator.
- Xero Certified Professional (Level 2) — the practice runs cloud-first, with client records accessible to clients at all times.
- Working in accounting since 2018 — general practice across bookkeeping, financial statements and small business compliance, which is the grounding the specialism is built on.
- Two years in-house crypto accounting — practical experience with exchange data, digital asset reconciliation and the reporting questions that follow.
How the practice works
Lodestar is deliberately small. You deal directly with the person doing your work, which has consequences in both directions and it is worth being straight about both.
What you get: a reply from the person who did the work rather than a round trip through an account manager, someone who remembers the details of your situation without re-reading a file, and continuity from one year to the next.
What you do not get: a large team absorbing an unlimited volume of work. If we are not the right fit for what you need, we will say so at the consultation rather than take the engagement and hope.
How we work with clients
- Fixed fees, agreed upfront. You have the number in writing before any work starts. No hourly billing, no invoices that arrive requiring explanation.
- Plain language. Technical accuracy matters, but so does your understanding what you are signing.
- Honest about uncertainty. Reconstructed crypto history sometimes rests on genuine estimates. Where a figure does, we document it rather than presenting an estimate as a certainty.
- Cloud-first. Xero and secure document sharing. Your records are accessible to you, from anywhere, without asking for them.
The name
A lodestar is the fixed star navigators steer by. Given how much of this work involves people trying to find their bearings in an area that has moved faster than the guidance around it, the name seemed about right.
